The ideas behind the stories seem to flow from my ability to extract, from the minutiae of my daily experiences, universally applicable generalities of a humourous kind.
Take for instance, the title story idea for my first book. The Day That Loyalty Backfired, which came to me one day when the checkout person at our local Walmart quite spontaneously came out with “I see someone’s had a bit too much coffee!” in response to my frenzied chatter. Even I had to laugh as did the young woman and my wife.
And from that germ of shared humour, I invented a series of unlikely scenarios wherein a loyalty program and a caffeine-induced high is taken to humourous levels. Once I’ve identified a kernel of humour that I feel readers will identify with I then, just nudge my imagination up a notch or two and there’s my formula for laughter.
